Everyone knows it’s impossible for the NSA to buy rack space in Bulgaria, where they literally don’t have to deal with any US legal process.

It’s also impossible for the NSA to market such a service via pop-privacy blogs and social media profiles.

The funny part about this is that the Snowden leaks showed that the NSA actually put a lot of effort into doing shit like this specifically to avoid all the paperwork which came with accidentally collecting data from US citizens. Keeping the data and analysis off shore means no pesky FISA paperwork.

Too many tourists just means you need to raise hotel prices. Locals don’t pay for hotels.

This shit has been the same cycle for literally centuries. When times are good, locals hate tourism. When times are bad, the locals wonder where all the tourists money went.

In these “tourist economy” areas it’s easy to miss the fact that even if you don’t directly work in the tourist industry, there’s a ton of infrastructure and services which get propped up by that industry. I’ve been on both sides of this, as a local and a tourist, and most of the whining is privileged elitism. Every local knows how to avoid tourists, and every local has also been frustrated by something being closed in the off season. Connect those dots and stop complaining.

In most cases if you are a tourist and are accused of minor crimes you just get deported unless you’ve done something else more serious. Detaining someone on a short term visa is awkward (what if their passport expires while in custody?) and kicking them out of the country accomplishes the same thing as jailing them.

There’s a reason why countries with proper transit infrastructure view alcoholism as a novelty.

This is precisely why always working from home is unhealthy and the context switch would be worth the psychological boost it provides if not for the commute. I know people really liked the liberation of WFH at first but I just don’t think it is going to be sustainable. It has nothing to do with productivity, but it’s the next simmering mental health crisis.

Nah, more like “Russian bots exist and some people I disagree with are Russian bots.” Which is pretty much the entire premise of the article.

It’s also pretty easy to tell the difference IMO. The trolls tend to just do nothing but troll and flame. They don’t really spend much time engaging on other topics.

As far as why I think Lemmy is a training ground? Call it a hunch. Obviously I don’t have a notarized letter from a troll farm saying that they are in control of a certain worldnews forum, but a lot of the usual suspects fit a bit too neatly into that box to not raise an eyebrow. There are some other patterns as well but its definitely all circumstantial.

And before people say “not Lemmy, we are too small” - It’s pretty obvious that a major Lemmy instance is literally a training ground for these recruits before they get promoted to Facebook and reddit duty (either intentionally or otherwise). There have been a few narratives this election which seem to have been tested out on here weeks before getting to Facebook and reddit. “Blue MAGA” was a pretty obvious one they seemed to workshop on Lemmy.

Liberalism is such a Boogeyman term on “the left.” Classical liberalism is very compatible with lib left ideals, and in many ways informs that philosophical lineage. Everyone gets wrapped up in the idea of private property being a core value, when it is really a corollary hanging off the core value of rights for the individual. Property or no property, the core idea is scarcity harm reduction. There are many ways to get there, and the best ones agree that licking some authoritarian boot is a terrible way to liberate people.
