If we let BYD into the U.S. market, it could end up destroying american manufacturersEnglish12·6 天前As an European living in Asia and can’t help but cringe at American cars. They’re so far behind. And it’s the car country. Japan has better cars and better rail. Embarassing.

Dr. Moose@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Despite boycott threats: Spain buys Israeli techEnglish4·6 天前This is just working. Spain is no demand for military tech and could easily spend time shopping around for years.

North Europe is having 30º C mid days and 12º evenings which is very unusual and obviously not great for people and infrastructure.

Dr. Moose@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Ethiopian parliament passes bill banning single-use plastic bagsEnglish3·11 天前How is single use defined here? Because some places do “single use is anything below 5nm thickness” and you uusy end up with more plastic.
Edit: seems anything above 30 microns is still legal which basically means only cling wrap and similar. Shopping bags on avg are 50 microns or so.
Dr. Moose@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•'Just in': Elon Musk officially launches new political partyEnglish141·11 天前Maybe that’s the only way US will ever get a third party. I’m not an American but I do think american politics system would be significantly stronger even with a minority 3rd party. Can you imagine how powerful US would be with a diverse parlament that has true competition of ideas not just partisan voting? That’s true “checks and balances”.

Emerging scientific evidence indicates that frequent digital technology use has a significant impact—both negative and positive—on brain function and behavior. Potential harmful effects of extensive screen time and technology use include heightened attention-deficit symptoms, impaired emotional and social intelligence, technology addiction, social isolation, impaired brain development, and disrupted sleep. However, various apps, videogames, and other online tools may benefit brain health. Functional imaging scans show that internet-naive older adults who learn to search online show significant increases in brain neural activity during simulated internet searches. Certain computer programs and videogames may improve memory, multitasking skills, fluid intelligence, and other cognitive abilities. Some apps and digital tools offer mental health interventions providing self-management, monitoring, skills training, and other interventions that may improve mood and behavior. Additional research on the positive and negative brain health effects of technology is needed to elucidate mecha

Its just a computer. If you don’t have temperance to handle it then that can be taught to 90% of people.
Dr. Moose@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Study finds smartphone bans in Dutch schools improved focusEnglish46·12 天前But we know for a fact that prohibition is a weak tool that almost never works. So whats your point?
Your argument premise is flawed as phone is beyond “just a distraction”. Why not remove all other students and chairs and windows - they’re all distractions!
I’m not sure why I even bother commenting here on lemmy when people are so small minded and can’t contribute to discussions without taking the most reductionist view. We’re not deciding policy here but just discussion what should be an interesting and engaging topic.
Dr. Moose@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•Study finds smartphone bans in Dutch schools improved focusEnglish25·12 天前The article clearly says this is ban is beyond just classes.
There’s much more to schools than just focus in classes.
I get that these are poor countries but leeching from ruzi invasion blatantly like this is just disappointing. As history is permanent now on the internet it’s inevitable that they’ll run into problems and people will have all the reasons to br awful.
