  • I really feel like you’re forgetting this

I think the guy’s heart is in the right place though, I think he just hasn’t done the legwork yet on studying how modern socialist states are moving on lgbt issues and why they’re doing so.

is how you defend that above screenshot people are pointed out. I don’t understand how you can’t see the contradiction implicit. A person’s heart can’t be in the right place if they say things like what was said in the original comment. It occurs to me on reread maybe I don’t understand it? It’s a bit ambiguously worded. But it has popped up before in these conversations and its cited whenever l.ml users reach out to the other big gay instances.

We should accept each other not based on “how modern socialist states are moving”. That phrase “doing the leg work” is doing a lot of leg work being nonspecific about what someone is actually learning and internalizing.

Its just uncomfortable to be in a supposedly welcoming space where allyship arises from first principles and not from real empathy. Its not a college class you can study for.

  • I think this is a community organiser and not a faceless national government. Making lgbt policy and learning in your personal life to be better aren’t the same thing. Not dissimilar to when right wingers call something “political.”

One would think class struggle would be the first thing socialists would appeal to instead of a milquetoast attempts to reassure people “its okay, the Revolutionary Cause are slowly learning to view you as people!”

Man is a person. He answers to a community. He’s not actually a party official of the revolutionary guard and you and I are allowed to demand better. The way I wrote the last post gave you ample opportunity clap back at me with proof from Dessines that he felt differently, which I honestly expect exists somewhere at least as damage control. But instead we are arguing the semantics over whether a man should take responsibilty for his own bigotry or whether the entire global leftist project should bear that burden for him. I’d rather be slurred to my face than have people bullshit me we’re on the same side while talking about us like we’re props; if only the right ideological mutant strain of intersectional communism that you personally advocate for as being inevitable were to triumph, then the callous way we’re discussed will have been justified. You’re sharing the table with a bigot, or at least you’re leaving a chair open with this rhetoric of pragmatic “usefulness to the cause”. I am happy to be proven wrong (for the sake of .ml’s community) but even if I am this line of reasoning you employ just does not work.

  • I don’t really know the drama around this guy except The Screenshot everybody posts so I’m not going to act as if I care about his personal opinions, but I don’t like what I see as hypocrisy. There can be no allyship with someone who understands our experience purely through the lens of political opportunism. Empathy is the real prerequisite for decency here. There is a lot of talk on this guy and whether he updated his stance after that screenshot but I don’t think it matters unless he signals himself a understanding of lgbt people as human fools trapped in the same exploitation he is. And hell I don’t know, maybe he wrote that post awhile ago, and if he did good for him. But it rather seems like he lets people speak for him on this issue.

  • This is a weird take. Lgbt people shouldn’t need to be a useful pawn for socialism in order to be treated with respect. We deserve rights and respect because we’re as human as the rest of you theoretically. If someone ostensibly left-wing or socialist needs to read theory in order value my life and needs as a proletarian ally then they can necessarily be no ally of mine. More work needs to be done beyond tacit academic acceptance.

What other minority has to be vetted for their use before being welcomed into your so-called revolutionary project?

  • Here in Sweden you won’t get arrested for protesting peacefully.

If you want to stage a protest you need permission from the police, they are required to grant it to you unless it can’t be done safely, then they can suggest a different location for the protest.

Wow I hope Sweden never has any sort of rightward turn that would suddenly leave your “right to protest” (“peacefully”) (with mum’s permission) very much in the air. I hope you never have to fear they ID’d you at an event where the police kettled things from a protest into a survival riot. I hope you never have to decide whether to pop your phone in a faraday bag. Take the battery out. Never need to hide your face from a government fond of making lists. Never fear gait recognition following you home thru a hundred CCTV cameras. The raid that comes in the night when you realize your freedoms were quite illusory. I hope your protest movement isn’t demonized by the media or arbitrarily designated a terrorist organization.

Fuck your shaming. We don’t protest for glory and clout. We protest because we are human. And some of us land immediately in the crosshairs unless we try to protect ourselves. Am I being hyperbolic? Ask the environmental movement the UK branded as terroristic for highlighting how close to extinction we are. Ask Cop City protestors. Ask Palestinian supporters in Germany. Ask BLM protestors who did nothing illegal and ended up in black vans being intimidated.

    Grow up. Freedom isn’t free.

But for Deus Ex, we’ve got… I don’t know, Cyberpunk 2077, maybe? But the whole open world thing doesn’t really fit in with the usual gameplay loop of Deus Ex. There are a fair amount of great cyberpunk games, but none seem to really scratch that immersive sim itch. I guess Prey is pretty close as well (in addition to its System Shock influences), if you consider some of the body/power upgrades, but it’s not all that similar thematically.

Check out Cruelty Squad by Ville Kallio on Steam. Aesthetically and spiritually it scrys into the future on the same level Deus Ex did and delivers an even more dire prophecy that feels as disturbingly prescient. It takes the open ended levels of DX and adds insane verticality and mind bending traversal. It plays more tactically than Deus Ex but the augment system is really rewarding and enables the player to munchkin their way to their target.

You may notice it looks artistically like a 13th century Christian piece with a Jackson Pollock splotch of New Years Eve stomach soup all over the canvas. I retort that so did DX1 most of the time. The CS playerbase refers to our ability to parse and navigate this style of level design and eclectic color composition as the ‘CEO mindset.’

But seriously I am a big Deus Ex enjoyer and other than Thief nothing has come as close to the full breadth of experience that world evokes in me. It is both terrible and beautiful to behold.

  • The moral obscenity is that it’s been 70 years since the holocaust and we still won’t admit when a genocide is happening if it’s at all inconvenient for us until we’ve personally toured the camps and seen the human soot. The victims of genocide wait for Kock-funded, glue huffing NYT columnists to agree amongst themselves, and the wider consensus of respected Kock-money takers, to agree that a thing is genocide. Colonial India. Apartheid. Vietnam and Cambodia. Iraq and Afghanistan. We’ll always be waiting on evil fuckwhits at the New York Times and the Atlantic and so on to agree that people are dying because other people really fucking loathe them and consider them bugs. But GOD FORBID we be semantically incorrect as to the degree of wanton murder and the bombing of refugee corridors.

    Little Nazi shitbags.

  • Oh, but somebody please fucking tell me how great being LGBT in China is, and how overblown the oppression is. Somebody please, describe to me how there is no problem because my personhood would be recognized and my healthcare provided for if I’m lucky enough to be in a ‘tier 1’ city in the wonderful communist utopia of the PRC. Someone tell me this woman from China is lying about having to put the clamps on her Chinese account because the Chinese government want her, generally, to shut the fuck up, don’t rock the boat. And of course, she’s not been torturemurdered yet. So, with the threat of her partner’s life. they’ve coerced her into giving up her white hat hacking career. Speak out, and we will throw your girlfriend into a death camp.

She was probably just unlucky she was born in one of those “backwards” places where the local police have unlimited power AND the tactlessness to use it. But she’s a good uplifted middle class girl, so she should culturally have access to the China I’m told is real where this shit doesn’t happen. Must be her fault for not moving to one of the good cities.
