The problem is that Ariane 6 is already an obsolete previous-gen design, not one part is reusable. SpaceX is the dominant launch provider for a very solid reason and ultimately the only way to compete with them is going to be to adopt their ideas and methodologies.

Whether it’s “silly” or not is irrelevant, the problem described in the article is real. I have seen innumerable PDFs over the years that were atrocious when it came to the use of those accessibility features, the format’s design factors in to how people use it and people use it terribly. If plain old OCR were enough then this wouldn’t be such a problem.

Meanwhile, Europe is pursuing replacements for Ukraine. Obviously none as good as Starlink and there’ll be a rough time in the switchover, but Musk is not the only source for this kind of service.

So the purpose of this article is to convince people of a particular answer, not to actually evaluate the arguments pro and con.
America losing is not equivalent to Russia winning.

One of the biggest gripes I’ve had with Americans over the years has been their perspective that America was the whole world. The rest of the world was just “out there somewhere”, some vague hinterland that news stories came from sometimes but that didn’t really matter and was totally at the whim of whatever was going on in the real place in the world, America. Even now, even among the Americans who are horrified at Trump and what he’s doing and want to say sympathetic things to the allies he’s screwing over, we’re still seeing this.
Putin’s useful idiot has smashed America and America’s global dominance. This is bad for America, sure. But it’s not necessarily bad for the whole world, and it’s not necessarily even good for Putin in the grand scheme of things. Putin is still three years into his three-day “special military operation”, with his troops travelling to the front lines on crutches and donkeys to die in meat waves. Finland and Sweden joined NATO. The EU is allocating hundreds of billions of Euros to defense. Germany just elected a government that seems willing to stand up and join them in combating Russia. Russia is still completely hosed. It is not bending the world to Putin’s vision.
Sure, it would have been nice to have America fully on board with defeating him too. But America’s only a part of the whole world, and an increasingly smaller part these days. Let them go wallow in the isolation they seemingly crave.

I’ve long thought that even if Russia is supporting Donald, that doesn’t really make Donald Russia’s “operative.” That gives far too much credit to Donald. He never keeps any agreement he’s made for one second longer than he thinks it’s personally benefiting him.
Canada is actually in a pretty good position, geographically, if you ignore the fact that our two immediate neighbours are hostile powers bent on conquering our land and taking our resources. We can get involved in both Atlantic alliances and Pacific alliances. All we need to do is survive long enough to get those nicely sorted, and rebuild our strength after having America yank the rug out from under us.
The US is a representative democracy, and those were its chosen representatives. Sorry, but you can’t collectively vote Trump into office and then immediately go “woah, we have nothing to do with any of this!” When he turns out to be exactly what everyone expected him to be.
And frankly, seeing the mod abuse that goes on in many communities, having AI moderators helping with text moderation would be nice too. At least they’d be more consistent.
Unfortunately, there’s no EU or NATO equivalent for us to rely on.
I would say this is a good time for you guys to make one. My home country is Canada, and I think it’d be great to see defensive pacts in both the Atlantic and Pacific - we’d be keen on joining both of them, I suspect. We’re threatened by Chinese influence too.
Problem is, a lot of them already are suffering and poor. Look at the nightmare that is American health care, for example. They’re dead last among the developed world and people would rather risk death than call an ambulance because they fear it’ll put them and their next-of-kin into debt forever. Losing a job can mean death for some because their health insurance depends on employment.
And yet the propaganda reverberates back and forth among them; “The United States is the greatest country in the world! Land of the free and home of the brave!”
I’m Canadian, and Trump’s been Trumping a lot about how Canada should be forcibly made the “51st state.” He said, among other insane and offensive drivel, that Canadians would get better healthcare if that happened. I honestly think a lot of Americans believe that. They are deeply indoctrinated.
We’ve seen plenty of other countries where this kind of indoctrination works. People may live terrible lives of deprivation, but as long as they believe their enemies are worse off they love dear leader for the bounty they’ve been given.
Hence why I said “I’m kind of looking forward to seeing what Europe manages to put together as a replacement.”
That axis is “USA + two regional powers that can’t even invade a neighboring country properly and have negligible economies.” Not exactly an upgrade over the alliances the US had before.
