  • So sad. I remember a friend talking about it 20 years ago. It really sounded as peaceful as the article describes it, but:

Bali politician Agung Bagus Pratiksa Linggih said he had seen an increase in long-term visitors with low budgets in the years since the Covid-19 pandemic

“Shootings in Bali are unheard of. In Melbourne, they happen all the time, but not here,” he said. “People are asking how they even got the guns. Is there an underworld market forming?”

According to Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency, in 2023, only three firearm-related crimes were recorded in Bali.

“We’ve seen meth labs, villa robberies, crypto scams, property fraud, and ATM theft – often involving Russian or eastern European groups,” he said.

He blamed Bali’s open-door tourism model and post-pandemic economic desperation.

edit: the article can’t decide if it focuses on Autralians or all tourists, but that doesn’t make it less true.

Looks at date… meh. We’ve been through this, OP. Many years ago. In great detail. Meaning, among other things, plenty of lazy outrage posting like this.

And Torvalds has my full respect for facing the music and coming out a better person. Not many people are able to admit they’ve been wrong about something, and even fewer are able to actually do something about it.

Still, without the old Torvalds we wouldn’t have memes like this one either.

  • Before Nokia was assimilated and digested by Microsoft, it open sourced the OS

    Huh. Did not know.

Symbian’s swansong was the remarkable Nokia 808 PureView. The 808 and other late-model Symbian devices run Nokia Belle which was really quite nice.

I still have a device here that runs that version. A Nokia 701. With AngryBirds games on it. It had an extensive app store. And that wonderful tiny charger connector (but also takes a charge from USB micro).
    Nokia 701

there was that brief attempt at a revival by Planet Computers but it really didn’t stick

Oh, again I did not know that. I was interested in one of their later devices for a while, a keyboard phone running true Linux iirc.

  • American voters in both major parties consistently vote against their own collective interests in order to maximize individual gain.

Well said, but it’s not just American voters. Also it depends very much on how you explain things to voters - individual gain and collective interest are not opposites, but that’s what a corporate lobbyism/propaganda machine has been promoting for many decades.

For example, consider that the historical self-narrative and cultural lexicon for young American students is essentially:

Yeah just yesterday I watched snippets of old Reagan & Bush II speeches. They are so dumb and smarmy and naive.
