I bought Sync Pro for Reddit, and I’ll do the same for Lemmy. Open-source can suck a butt, I’m willing to pay for a well made app

Edit: lmao the replies! To be clear, I am not talking shit on open source software, the “open source can go suck a butt” comment was in reference to taking the time to get used to a new app when I don’t have to 😝 Go touch grass. Sync treated me well, I’m willing to pay the creator to have that same experience on Lemmy. That’s it. Stop being defensive, go for a walk.

Why people insulting them just for this comment? Open-source fanatics are real.

        Probably because of

        Open-source can suck a butt

They then edited and said they’re not taking a shit on open source software, in direct contradiction to what they said before. It shouldn’t be a surprise that people didn’t like it. Also, “touch grass” is a really stupid phrase since most people browse the internet on their phones and can just as easily be outside sitting in grass as anywhere else.

I think they are saying that without the core Lemmy team, there wouldn’t be a platform for Sync to build off of (or Kbin, but same thing applies). There’s obvious truth in that statement, but I don’t think it’s a reason to belittle people for being willing to pay for an app. However in OP’s case here, (at least without the edit) it does kind of come across as a “fuck you” to the actual platform that Sync is using. Probably not his intention, but perception is reality.

If anything though, we should be reminding people of this and asking them to consider also donating to the continued development of Lemmy or to the running of the instance they use. Not sure why there’s this huge circlejerk about people paying for Sync. Let people do what they want…

It’s good to see this point being made.

There’s a lesson here: people are willing to pay good money to participate on lemmy. What applies to the app may (I’d hope) apply to servers and development.

Sync user and server supporter, here. Hope we only grow in number.

People that diss open source are dumbass dipshits. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Open source software runs most of the Internet and this social media platform. It has provide more value to every one of us than any closed source retail software ever could.

I’m sorry to say, but you seem to be clueless in the world of software engineering. Open vs closed source does not make any software better or worse. This solely depends on the talent and will of the developers to create a good app for you. That can happen in both worlds, but just because an app is not open source doesn’t make it better in any ways. Rethink it. Sync might be a nice client, but you’re dependent on this one dev to always deliver a good experience and keep updating, whereas if it was open source, you could be sure someone would continue the work and help fix some issues if anything was to happen. Open source has a lot of potential. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking it’s worse in any way. It’s not.

Theres often times I come across an open source product that beats the shit out of the closed source alternatives too
