GrapheneOS is the best! I can now confirm it works great on the tablet as well! I understand it’s ironic de-google phone/tablet with google hardware, but it just works better then anything else. Permission toggles, pin scrambling, auto-reboot, scopes, MAC randomization, isolated user profiles, longer passwords, sandboxed apps, open source firmware, no bloat & the battery life is incredible now.
It is easy to move to Linux & GrapheneOS full time & remove Apple, Google, Microsoft etc. It exceeded expectations so much so that I want to share it with other people. I cannot recommend this enough to improve your life. #FOSS
grapheneos (dot) org = more information!
are there seriously already people being paid to shill on lemmy?
every single one of your posts is about how great grapheneos is.

We need a Fediverse version of Rimjob Steve (i liked that subreddit).
Yes. Every time I shill GrapheneOS on Lemmy, Daniel Micay sends me $1. He also pays me $0.75 every time I insult his critics. You can get in on this too if you’d like, it’s a great way to make some extra cash.

Truly informative and unfortunate.
The reason people advocate for GrapheneOS is that it’s a good OS.
It really is that good tho. This is word of mouth in action, zero issue with it.
Isn’t GrapheneOS the one that threatened Louis Rossman over an extremely mundane Youtube comment?
Not sure tbh, but p sure Micay was swatted multiple times by some peeps who arent into GrapheneOS.
I’m pretty sure they were unconfirmed incidents and he refused to provide any kind of evidence they happened.
He also left the project a while back.
Oh gotcha. I was just taking his word for it since he posted about it on Mastodon.
https://grapheneos.social/@DanielMicay/110437193194466711
Also, looks like he step down from leadership roles, but didn’t leave the project.
Those toots are also pretty confusing, since IIRC he’s referring to the supposed targeted harassment campaign he claims the CalyxOS devs launched against him. But he has never actually shown any evidence of this either, and just refers to his own past statements when asked.
Ah ok. None of the extracurricular stuff appeals to me either way.
He has helped me a ton. He has helped me understand a lot how GrapheneOS approaches things in a way that helps the user. He even implemented one of my suggestions a while back. I will forever appreciate his work.
I will always see him as a very intelligent, helpful, caring dev of a great project. He was a little odd at times, but I believe he meant well with everything he did.
A lot of people didn’t agree with how he ran things, so he ended up handing over control. I hope he gets the help he needs. I also hope whatever he does next is bigger and better.
Lemmy has undercover ads now?
It’s weird to say “with Android app compatibility” when it’s quite literally Android + half a dozen patches.
It has its own browser, attestation, backup, and play store interface. A ton of the code is also pushed upstream.
You’re making this project sound like its some random fork of Android, which is a disservice.
So by that logic, those weird custom builds of Windows 11 where they remove all Microsoft apps and install new defaults like Firefox aren’t Windows - they’re a magical new OS that happens to be compatible with Windows apps.
The actual changes the ROM itself is got over AOSP are not that big - some of the security patches are just Linux security features that aren’t usually enabled on Android.
Having built in apps made by the project is great - and sure is a lot of work. No amount of built in apps makes it a different OS though.
Would you not call Ubuntu a different OS than Debian? And if you do, would you find it unreasonable to say that Ubuntu offers Debian app compatibility?
GrapheneOS and stock Android have a similar relationship.
I would find weird if Ubuntu was marketed as “a different operating system compatible with Linux binaries” yes. Though the difference between your average Linux distros is a thousand times more significant than the differences between AOSP and Graphene.
The difference between custom windows builds and GrapheneOS is that one is buggy and broken and the other isn’t. Probably because Windows is proprietary and not designed to be modified, unlike Android.
Also yes, you can modify AOSP and call it a separate OS. Plenty of other projects have done so in the past.
one is buggy and broken and the other isn’t
Cool beans, but no comment of mine was about buggy software and your reply opposing my comment had nothing to do with bugs either.
Your comment said it was Android + half a dozen patches.
The AOSP camera has been forked with over 1100+ commits. Thats just one app. https://github.com/GrapheneOS/Camera/commits/main
Love GrapheneOS, don’t love the weird combative community culture, or (former) lead developer tho…
As far as android phones, I only recommend the latest Pixel devices with GrapheneOS support. It might be a bit of a learning curve, but you’ll be better off in the end once you install GrapheneOS on it.
For now, I can’t recommend using anything else in the android ecosystem.
This. And lets be honest, the reason Graphene only supports pixel devices is because you can re-lock the boot loader enhancing the security of the device exponentially.
~if you have verizon, you cannot buy the phone through them (they …do things… that make it difficult to impossible to root.) ~
Only issue is that pixels are not very good quality.
Hopefully next one is better.
I’ve been using Graphene for years. Its great, no complaints.
It doesn’t support Android Auto, right? That’s what’s holding me back from installing it.
Me waiting for instructions to install it on an iPad AirI’m waiting for Nintendo Switch support
My Samsung Smart Fridge eagerly awaits
Do regular apps like Uber/maps/banks work flawlessly in this without jumping through hoops or randomly breaking ?
I’m interested in trying it but im a bit concerned about switching a device I rely on so much to it.
Yup they all work, you only need to install sandboxed Google play services.

Wake me up when it runs on more than like 5 bloody phones that aren’t made by Google I guess then.
It really is that good tho. This is word of mouth in action, zero issue with it.
