Lol I was in a panic as I figured it would just work haha and nope, definitely not haha. But your tips eventually got it to relent and finally pair, I appreciate it so much.
Loving this thing, just getting my ass kicked around Hirata Estate in Sekiro (send tips or advice, I am the WORST Shinobi, this kid I’m supposed to rescue is fucked unless I get better hahaha).
Thanks for being awesome and helping with the quickness yesterday!
Can I ask what solution helped you to pair them with the Steam deck?
Hey yeah, sorry on my Honeymoon so only near my phone and the deck itself sporadically. I still am not 100% positive which of the suggestions made it eventually pair because I was taking a bit of a shotgun approach to trying nearly everything at once before takeoff.
With that said it’s likely the following:
-
Turning off Find My in the Air Pod settings (general settings area on the iPhone)
-
Renaming the Airpods to something different (BatPods in my case lol)
-
Turning off BT on the iPhone
-
Paired EVENTUALLY in game mode for me (others suggested Desktop mode which I tried but it didn’t work)
-
Trying repeatedly without changing stuff every time. It took a while for it to finally pair while.
Idk what did it (switched to beta too), but it paired and I will say I still don’t have volume in certain games (Sekiro for example which is somehow extra hard without sound haha).
I will investigate further after the trip but won’t unpaid till then and try again. Will try to narrow it down though to help my fellow Lemmings.
I also had this issue after I finally got my AirPods paired to my steam deck. What fixes it for me is after launching the game, open the Steam menu, go to Settings, and change the output device to the built in speakers, then back to the AirPods.
I didn’t have to turn off “Find My,” rename, or change anything on my iPhone for my AirPods Pro 2. I just followed Apple’s instructions.
I also had to use the Steam button below the left trackpad and go into Settings to flip audio to internal then back to Bluetooth to get the sound to stop being choppy (in Rez Infinite), but I lay the blame for that on Valve, not Apple.
Also dumb: the ⋯ quick access button below the right trackpad lets you turn Bluetooth off and on under ⚙ Quick Settings, but upon re-enabling Bluetooth the AirPods don’t display underneath or connect. You still have to go into Settings → Bluetooth to connect.
“It just works”
It does… with Apple products. They couldn’t give a shit whether it works with your Steam Deck.
“It just works (with limited compatibility)”

Here’s the link to their post at least. Don’t know which answer helped them though.
Saw your thread yesterday and I could feel your panic! Sadly I had no ideas but glad to hear it all worked out.
Oh man I thought I had prepped everything: Had the SD card full of compressed roms, the screen protector, deck plug-ins, little foldable keyboard, controller, dock, extra juice…like was ready for any challenge haha but just assumed the little buds would work no problem much to my horror they did not LOL. Lemmy saved me though, so grateful to everyone.
Can we get some more information about what the problem and solution was? Or a link to your other thread?
Here is the original thread he posted https://lemmy.world/post/1522014
Struggling to see any resolution here haha.
What did you see, DenverCoder9?? (xkcd reference: https://xkcd.com/979/)
Posted above, sorry haven’t been able to post…still not 100% sure what worked cause I tried a bunch of stuff all at once. But I’ll investigate after the trip and see if I can figure it out.
Na dude have fun with your honeymoon, we aren’t important haha.
Haha will do.
I saw the thread, but don’t have any technical expertise on the subject, so I didn’t comment. Thanks for the update!
Glad you got it sorted. The deck is great for traveling so you want headphones to fully enjoy it with sound.
Got excited to take it out for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Turns out I get almost instantly carsick 🙄
Yes I’m the same but trains and planes are ok for me at least.
