To give an example of what I’m thinking of…Kingdom of Loathing, Lioden, Flight Rising.
What are some others? I’m sure there’s entire genres of browser-based games I’ve missed.
Universal Paperclips: https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/
It’s a semi-idle clicker game, ala Cookie Clicker, but a bit more interactive and very cool. There is a definitive end to it which is nice for this type of game.
Looks like someone else already got to this before I did, but +1 to trying it out.
I second this suggestion, one of those games where the less you know about it the better
Was a surprisingly fun way to tank my productivity on Monday.
Honestly, the fact that you mentioned it having a definite end was a huge factor in making me click on that link.
Universal Paperclips, epic game highly recommended but expect to lose hours of your time.
It’s a predecessor of Sunless Sea, Sunless Skies and Mask of the Rose.
Lots of grinding in the later game, but still highly recommended because of the fantastic text quality. I played it for almost a year.
Fallen London is pretty cool . It is even better if they don’t have the candle 🕯️
Pay once for full game like sunlesssea please.
I also willing to pay for more content dlc
Oh, man. I haven’t heard of Kingdom of Loathing in for ever . I recall grinding the hell out of it back when, and getting all the way to the final stand-off with the big bad and… there was a placeholder. So, I messaged the dev and he all but told me to spend some time in the real world, the final boss wasn’t ready yet, wtf was I doing speedrunning? 🤪😅
Try out the new PC games for kingdom of loathing. There’s a fun western and a noir based one. Same humor and better gameplay
I’ll go for something more simple, but that you still can spend hours on.
Tetris. Jstris if you want a minimalistic version and Tetr.io if you want something more polished.
I also like to play minesweeper, minesweeper.online is the best one I’ve found. I especially like the no-guessing mode which makes the game a lot less frustrating.
In this vein, sudokuslam.com is cool too
Different genres I guess but
Simon Tatham Puzzle Collection
Stitches (with links to more games, don’t think there’s a central site)
I love Simon Tatham’s puzzles
Not a game but still a good time killer learning to type faster and faster https://www.keybr.com/
Your all time top speed beats 99.42% of all other people.
Your all time average speed beats 95.57% of all other people.
Do not many people use this website, or is 105 wpm top speed and 87 wpm average speed actually that crazy? I just learned to type like this in high school.
As far as I understand it, most folks growing up these days do everything on their smart phones or tablets. Like, teachers sometimes have literally gotten entire essays written on a phone. (I would go crazy trying to do that…but people make do with the tech they’re given when young, and get good at it.)
So, for some segment of the population–yeah, touch-typing on a physical keyboard is no longer a thing. And even when I was young, people getting truly good at it 80+ wpm) was pretty rare. You had to be into writing, either as a hobby, or as an unavoidable part of your job.
That’s wild! I’m in my mid 30s and assumed that kids were only learning touch typing more than I had in school (it was an optional class). Conversely, I go insane trying to type something of any real length on a phone/tablet screen and I’m sure a lot of them could screen type way faster than me.
A lot of people I see don’t even type in their phones they use voice to text also which I haven’t done because I don’t like talking to myself in public haha my brother in law also now sends voice recordings instead of texts which annoys me because I can’t just quickly read a message
Wow that’s awesome I’m still around 50 and I also took a typing class in highschool but I never really put the effort in to touch type until very recently because typing became more common with my job so I decided to finally start doing it right

Don’t wait in town.
That game took so many unexpected turns when I first played it.
Love it.
Super auto pets
Quick plug for the Lemmy community for it, hopefully we can get some more people involved:
Is there also a browser based version? I’ve only seen/played it on steam/PC and mobile
Yep. Browser is also where you can play the beta patch when it’s going on and you can play as a guest.
Line Rider was awesome!
It’s been a long time but I used to play Realm of the Mad God pretty often. Looks like it’s no longer available to play in a browser though.
I used to love that game. last time I tried to play it was filled with bots, unfortunately.
And microtransactions, it’s on steam now.
Kittens Game: http://kittensgame.com/web/
I’m sorry for taking away all of your free time.
civclicker a cookie clicker like game about creating your own antique empire https://civclicker.sourceforge.net/
why have you done this to me
Minor spoilers but… this is my favorite clicker game because it has an ending.
You can finish the game. And once you finish, you feel accomplished and never have to return (or you can replay if you feel like it I guess)
Long long time ago i can still remember… Runescape
QWOP 😀
