It’s hard not to get excited remembering how we found out about Half-Life 2. It was announced in a magazine that some random guy accidentally got sent a copy of early, then he scanned the pages and leaked it online. I think I was browsing some dodgy Russian website when I found out about it.

IIRC, he didn’t get sent it early, he got into Valve’s servers and snagged it.
The kicker, and this is the part I always remember: he guessed Gabe Newell’s password. It was gaben, same as his user name, same as his name name.
That’s the source code leak. The leaked announcement came from the magazine.

I feel like the fact he worked for Microsoft before starting Valve adds a whole new layer to the story, too.
You might be mixing up the first we knew about hl2 with the time the entire source code for the game was leaked early.
