It’s a key feature of Google maps that I don’t have a great replacement for. I assume moderating the reviews would be a significant challenge for the project.

Sometimes I even think about adding a Google Maps Link to POIs, because of Reviews. The reviews helping a lot to know what to expect from a POI before visiting them.

Thankfully there is no established tag yet.

Are google maps reviews even moderated? I’ve found them to be complete trash for years now

Just bots and influencers giving 5 or 1 star reviews for everything

I would also be interested in using and contributing to such a project!

these are pretty interesting! I don’t really like that the infra/data is centralized. always leaves room for bad actors to come along, whether they buy out the project or manipulate reviews.

would be cool if there are any projects out there that are doing something federated so you can choose which sets of review data you want to trust, I wonder if it’s possible to extend or plugin to ActivityPub.

Should be possible. With reviews however, one needs a central curator to weed out the spam reviews…

whether they buy out the project

Which is why an open license is important: it allows to fork if needed.
