The Unknown tracker alerts detection system went live for one of our tipsters on a Pixel phone running Android 14 beta with Play services 23.26.55. With Google saying the rollout commenced at the end of July, unknown tracker alerts should go live for more users in the next few days and weeks.

For now, Android’s unknown tracker alerts only work with AirTags. Google is working on expanding support to other tags in the coming months.

Guess the idea is a bike theif would see the warning and then look around for the tracker and remove it from the bike.

On the other side of the coin, they may choose to steal a bike without a tracker instead.

I’m hoping Google and apple will work out an option for that. The ability to tell them that a tag is tracking something stolen and not to alert. It will have to be tied strongly to an identity however, and potentially a police report.

How long that takes, on the other hand, is anyone’s guess.

Why for electric bikes and not just any bike? And arent the airtags peeeping when moved and the owners iphone isnt around? Which makes them useless for that purpose anyways.
