In our first past the post (FPTP) electoral system, it’s inevitable that political choice gets narrowed down to two major parties with barely a measurable fraction of votes going toward various third parties. The answer isn’t to try to buck the system and vote for a third party candidate anyway. The answer is to vote in primaries of the major parties for candidates willing to change our election laws so third parties can thrive. Until that happens, expect to hear that a vote for a third party is a vote for the candidate you least like.

Have to have ranked choice voting. You have to make the pasta before boiling it

I still don’t see how the democrat party’s inability to offer a decent candidate is my problem. If they want my vote, they can earn it; because abstention is still an option. Maybe they shouldn’t run such milquetoast capitalist stoolies in a system where only two nominees matter.

Putting aside the fact that anybody using the term “democrat party” wasn’t ever going to vote for a Democrat in any case… but let’s pretend you’re serious.

People who don’t vote are irrelevant to what the Democratic Party does. Only people who vote matter - if you can’t be bothered to pick among the candidates that you can pick between, nobody cares what you think or what you want. You’re not worth going after - you only focus on people who will vote.

Have you noticed how the Republican candidates literally get worse in every succeeding election? It’s because the zealots reliably vote for the most fascist adjacent candidate, the rank and file vote for the slightly less bad candidate, and year after year more and more of the moderately sensible ones quit the party in disgust. So the Overton window in the Republican Party ticks over to the right every election cycle. I’m old enough to remember when we all were positive the Republicans couldn’t get any worse than Reagan. But every election since has proved me too optimistic.

Democratic voters could move the party similarly to the left over time, but only if they’d reliably show up and vote for the further left candidate each and every time. But they don’t bother, so the national party keeps ticking over to the right chasing the Republicans.

There’s a lot of bad things to say about people who want what the Republicans are pushing, but you can’t say they aren’t committed.

Don’t act like leftists can change the party from within. They destroyed Iowa’s caucus to stop Bernie, or did you forget about the so-called Shadow App debacle? Did you forget how all the also-rans coordinated their drop outs to boost Biden while Warren stayed in to split the lefty vote? It’s very clear that the left can never win within the party because the party, itself, hates leftists. We can maybe get Congressional seats or stuff in local elections, but the presidency is fucked.

I’m voting for Cornel West to show the DNC that I am a voter that won’t be fooled by them anymore.

Yeah, that boogeyman doesn’t work anymore. Material conditions in my hood didn’t change during Trump or Biden’s administrations; carceral slavery is still the law of the land, while union protections, protections for the climate, and protections for my community still got slashed under a democrat administration, even though he swears he tried his best just like the Drone King did. tl;dr, I’d rather your country fall than pencilwhip another one of your death cult-serving settlers.
