Serious shit man. Shit post was as close as dank memes was for a while. But, I do understand why they did it and fuck the people that keep post CSAM.

Reddit does not own human communication. Do not give it such power

/s is a really useful tool to convey non seriousness in a textual conversation. Reddit did not invent it. The people that realized there was a gap in understanding and starting to textualize sarcastic tone did.

Just like emoticons and memes where embraced by internet culture before. The human condition earns to expressive itself in new and more nuanced ways.

In other terms: Language is open source.

I agree and let me add one more reason.

I don’t claim to represent all dumb people on the internet but being dumb myself, sometimes I need a clear indication that something is sarcastic, otherwise I just don’t get it.

You don’t need to be dumb to struggle with this sort of thing.

hard to ban a spam attack without also stopping any new sign ups. Also high risk, because the moment some scumbag uploads an image like that, it’s hosted on their server and they are legally at risk.

Yes, there were multiple spats of right-wing nazi trolls brigading the /c/ with propaganda spam from multiple alts. I have a feeling it was all one guy who got mad though, at most 2 or 3, because every new instance “alt” had the same memes (focusing on calling trans people pedos) and the same typing and title style. Plus, it initially started with one asshat who had alts with identical usernames spread out across 20+ instances- so it’d make sense he wisened up and kept making alts with new usernames.

Fuckin’ no-lifers gotta ruin it for everyone else man.

                  This will sound mega dumb.

                  But

I like to think they are this messed up because of some unknown dumb thing. My current take is micro plastics. Microplastics cause them to go off the deep end. Fix that, we fix them too.

It probably isn’t, but, it’s a nice distraction.

Hopefully we’ll get it back once this nonsense gets resolved. Was it the most popular .World community? Are there any similar ones that might substitute?

I think some instance owners having been talking to the team behind Lemmy about implementing some sort of detection system. Not sure how long that will take though considering all the feature requests they must be getting

What’s stopping us from building another? Why aren’t there several across the fediverse? Having one de facto just makes it vulnerable to the whims of trolls or a renegade mod.

Under normal circumstances that would make sense, however that is just sidestepping a major problem that needs to resolved. They could just post CSAM to wherever becomes popular.
